Othello
This is one of Shakespeare's most profound and thought-provoking tragedies. We will be reading Hamlet and Macbeth in class; they explore the classic themes of ambition and revenge. Othello brings up more complex and darker (no pun intended) concepts of race, as well as betrayal and revenge. I'll post again later - what do you think?
Frederick Douglass
One of the most interesting aspects of this work is Douglass's amazing use of the language. In some places it's brutally frank, but in others it's nearly poetic. In fact, the writing is so impressive that many refused to believe that the book was actually written by an uneducated escaped slave. As you read, find examples of the distinctive writing style that would cause people to have such doubts.
And here's the preface from William Lloyd Garrison that is in SOME editions - please read it - it's kind of fussy and archaic, but you really see the man's passion for both the abolitionist movement and Frederick Douglass. Note the comparison to Patrick Henry.

Here's a place to share...
I decided to create this blog for us to discuss literature or other things (movies? art? God help me, the Phillies?) When you make your comments, please identify yourself. I think this could be a terrific way to us to kind of toss around our ideas, opinions, and reflections on what we're doing in class (particularly for the more reserved people in the class). So, what I'll do is create a post for each book and then have another "miscellaneous" post where we can talk about anything that intrigues or interests us.
